How it Works
IDT VoiceLine is a low-cost phone service that uses your high-speed Internet, regular telephone and adapter to make and receive phone calls. The adapter (provided) connects your phone and modem to allow your calls to route through the Internet.
Getting Started
Getting started with IDT VoiceLine is easy! You will need:
- A high-speed (broadband) Internet connection
- A regular telephone
- A telephone adapter (included free with the purchase)
Setup is Simple
- Connect your telephone adapter to your high-speed
(broadband) modem
- Connect your regular phone to the telephone adapter.
Only the phone connected to the telephone adapter will work
with IDT VoiceLine. If you have phones in multiple rooms, consider using a
multi-handset phone so you that can connect the base phone unit to the telephone
adapter, and place the remaining handsets throughout the house.
Refer to the diagram below for more details.

Phone Number Options
You can transfer your phone number or get a new number with
IDT VoiceLine. You can even add additional phone numbers from around the
country and around the world to your IDT VoiceLine service so friends and
family can call you for less!
Transfer Your Phone Number
Keep your current phone number with IDT VoiceLine. See our guidelines
for more information on the transfer process and eligibility requirements.
Get a New Number
When you choose this option, you will get a new phone number
in your local calling area. This allows IDT VoiceLine to provide you with
Emergency (E911) Services for your safety. When you add a virtual, or
secondary, phone number to your account, geographic restrictions do not apply.
Virtual Phone Numbers
You can have more than one phone number!
Add virtual numbers to your IDT VoiceLine account so your
family and friends can call you for the price of a local call. For example, if
you live in New York City and have family in France, you can add a virtual
phone number with a Paris area code to your account. When your family calls
your virtual number, they will be charged the cost of a call to Paris -- even though they are speaking to you in New York!
Virtual Numbers are available from cities in the following
countries:
|
Australia |
Belgium |
Brazil |
| Canada |
Chile |
France |
| Israel |
Mexico |
Netherlands |
| Portugal |
Spain |
Sweden |
| Switzerland |
U.K. |
U.S. |
Virtual Numbers can be added for as low as $5 a month,
depending on the country you choose.
Transfer Your Phone Number - Guidelines
To transfer your current phone number to IDT VoiceLine it
must be active with your current phone service provider.
If you are a DSL subscriber, you will need to choose the new
phone number option. (If you were to transfer the phone number associated with
your DSL service, you would lose your broadband Internet connection, which is
required to use VoiceLine.)
How the phone number
transfer process works
You must authorize IDT VoiceLine to complete the transfer
process on your behalf when you enroll. You do not need to notify your current
phone service provider.
Once you have authorized the transfer to IDT VoiceLine, the
process takes approximately 2-4 weeks to complete. We will notify you by e-mail
with the date that your phone number transfer will take place as well as when
your number has been transferred successfully to IDT VoiceLine.
Please note that until your phone number is transferred, you
will not be able to use IDT VoiceLine and you will need to use your current
phone service to dial Emergency (911) Services, if needed.
If you choose to transfer your phone number, please follow these
guidelines:
- If you have placed a "freeze" order on your
phone number to prevent it from being switched to another provider, you
must contact your service provider to request that the "freeze"
be removed.
- Once you place your IDT VoiceLine order, please do not
make any changes to your current phone service, such as purchasing calling
features (Caller ID, for example), as this may delay the transfer. If you
already have a pending change or disconnect order, you must cancel that
order before transferring your number to IDT VoiceLine.
Please note: Not every phone number can be transferred to
VoiceLine. If your number is not eligible, you will have the option to choose a
new, separate phone number.
