How it Works

IDT VoiceLine is a low-cost phone service that uses your high-speed Internet, regular telephone and adapter to make and receive phone calls. The adapter (provided) connects your phone and modem to allow your calls to route through the Internet.

Getting Started

Getting started with IDT VoiceLine is easy! You will need:

  • A high-speed (broadband) Internet connection
  • A regular telephone
  • A telephone adapter (included free with the purchase)

Setup is Simple

  • Connect your telephone adapter to your high-speed (broadband) modem
  • Connect your regular phone to the telephone adapter.

Only the phone connected to the telephone adapter will work with IDT VoiceLine.  If you have phones in multiple rooms, consider using a multi-handset phone so you that can connect the base phone unit to the telephone adapter, and place the remaining handsets throughout the house.

Refer to the diagram below for more details.
For more information, view our Installation Tutorial.

Phone Number Options

You can transfer your phone number or get a new number with IDT VoiceLine. You can even add additional phone numbers from around the country and around the world to your IDT VoiceLine service so friends and family can call you for less!

Transfer Your Phone Number

Keep your current phone number with IDT VoiceLine. See our guidelines for more information on the transfer process and eligibility requirements.

Learn more about transferring your phone number.

Get a New Number

When you choose this option, you will get a new phone number in your local calling area. This allows IDT VoiceLine to provide you with Emergency (E911) Services for your safety.  When you add a virtual, or secondary, phone number to your account, geographic restrictions do not apply.

Virtual Phone Numbers

You can have more than one phone number!

Add virtual numbers to your IDT VoiceLine account so your family and friends can call you for the price of a local call. For example, if you live in New York City and have family in France, you can add a virtual phone number with a Paris area code to your account. When your family calls your virtual number, they will be charged the cost of a call to Paris -- even though they are speaking to you in New York!

Virtual Numbers are available from cities in the following countries:

Australia

Belgium

Brazil

Canada

Chile

France

Israel

Mexico

Netherlands

Portugal

Spain

Sweden

Switzerland

U.K.

U.S.

Virtual Numbers can be added for as low as $5 a month, depending on the country you choose.

Transfer Your Phone Number - Guidelines

To transfer your current phone number to IDT VoiceLine it must be active with your current phone service provider.

If you are a DSL subscriber, you will need to choose the new phone number option. (If you were to transfer the phone number associated with your DSL service, you would lose your broadband Internet connection, which is required to use VoiceLine.)

How the phone number transfer process works

You must authorize IDT VoiceLine to complete the transfer process on your behalf when you enroll.  You do not need to notify your current phone service provider.

Once you have authorized the transfer to IDT VoiceLine, the process takes approximately 2-4 weeks to complete. We will notify you by e-mail with the date that your phone number transfer will take place as well as when your number has been transferred successfully to IDT VoiceLine.

Please note that until your phone number is transferred, you will not be able to use IDT VoiceLine and you will need to use your current phone service to dial Emergency (911) Services, if needed.

If you choose to transfer your phone number, please follow these guidelines:

  • If you have placed a "freeze" order on your phone number to prevent it from being switched to another provider, you must contact your service provider to request that the "freeze" be removed.
  • Once you place your IDT VoiceLine order, please do not make any changes to your current phone service, such as purchasing calling features (Caller ID, for example), as this may delay the transfer. If you already have a pending change or disconnect order, you must cancel that order before transferring your number to IDT VoiceLine.

Please note: Not every phone number can be transferred to VoiceLine. If your number is not eligible, you will have the option to choose a new, separate phone number.

IDT VoiceLine Phone Numbers

What phone number can I get with IDT VoiceLine service?

IDT VoiceLine offers two types of phone numbers: primary and virtual. Your primary number is your main IDT VoiceLine number that is local to your calling area (either new or a transfer of your current number).  If you would like to enhance your service, you can add Virtual Numbers to your IDT VoiceLine Account for an additional fee. Virtual Numbers are available in the U.S., Canada or over a dozen other countries, including the U.K., France and Brazil.

Can I add an additional phone number to my IDT VoiceLine calling plan?

Yes, you can add up to 10 Virtual Numbers to your account. Virtual Numbers can be a U.S. or Canadian phone number, U.S. or U.K. toll-free number, or a phone number from a dozen other countries, regardless of where you live.  To add a Virtual Number, login to the online account center. Click "Manage Plan" on the left side of the page and then click "Add Phone Number" and follow the instructions.

How can having an additional IDT VoiceLine phone number benefit my family and friends?

Having additional phone numbers can allow your family and friends to call you for less. For example, if you live in New York City and have family in London, you can add a phone number with a  London area code to your account. Now, when your family calls you, they will be charged the cost of a local call -- even though they are speaking to you in New York!

Can I choose a phone number outside of my local calling area?

Due to 911 regulations, IDT VoiceLine requires that your primary number be local to your calling area.  You may also transfer your existing number. If you wish to have a phone number outside of your local calling area, you can add a Virtual Number.

Can I have a toll-free number?

Yes. IDT VoiceLine enables you to add a U.S. or U.K. toll-free phone number to your account. If you have a U.S. toll-free number then anyone in the U.S. can call you toll-free no matter where you are located. If you have a U.K. toll-free number anyone in the U.K. can call you toll-free.

Installation and Service Requirements

How do I set up my IDT VoiceLine service?

Simple installation instructions and a Getting Started Guide are included with your telephone adapter. Additionally, our online tutorial takes you through the easy set-up process.

What is “broadband”?

A broadband Internet connection is a cable modem, DSL, T1, T3, LAN, WAN or any other high-speed, “always on” connection. If you have a modem in your computer that needs to dial an access number to connect to the Internet, then you do not have a broadband connection.

What is a telephone adapter?

A telephone adapter is a device about the same size as an answering machine that allows you to connect your phone to your broadband Internet connection. The InnoMedia XT  telephone adapter is designed for use with IDT VoiceLine. The InnoMedia adapter is included when you sign up for the service.

I already have a telephone adapter. Can I use it with IDT VoiceLine?

At this time, you must use an InnoMedia XT telephone adapter from IDT VoiceLine. This telephone adapter has special firmware that is required to use the IDT VoiceLine service.

Do I need a router?

No. In addition to being a telephone adapter, the InnoMedia XT is also a router. This allows your Internet connection to be shared between your IDT VoiceLine service and your computer.

Do I use my own phone?

Yes. Plug your phone into the InnoMedia XT telephone adapter, pick up the handset, and dial when you hear the dial tone.

Do I need any additional accessories or equipment to start making calls?

No. To use the IDT VoiceLine service you simply need a broadband Internet connection, a telephone adapter, and a telephone.

Do I need a computer to use IDT VoiceLine?

No. You do not use a computer to make or receive calls with IDT VoiceLine. You will, however, need a computer with Web browser software to use the online account center and to make any configuration changes to your telephone adapter. (We recommend using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher.)

Can I use IDT VoiceLine with a USB broadband modem?

Yes. If you connect to the Internet through a USB modem, you will need to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ICS is a feature of Windows 2000 and Windows XP that allows the Internet connection used by one computer to be shared with other computers/devices.  The computer that will be sharing will need to be on when you are using IDT VoiceLine and should already be connected to the Internet. This computer should also have an available Ethernet port to connect to the InnoMedia MTA. If you use ICS, your call quality will be affected if you use your computer while making a call.

Follow these instructions to set up Internet Connection Sharing:
1. On the computer that will be sharing, click Start in the Windows taskbar, then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Network Connections icon, then right-click your current Internet connection and select Properties from the menu.
3. Click the Advanced tab. You should see the option to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection." Check this box.
4. In the Home networking connection dropdown menu, choose the
network card that is connected to the MTA.
You should now be able to share your Internet connection
with your MTA.If you have installed
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you may also need to disable the
Windows Firewall, which is on by default.

My broadband provider uses static IP addressing, not dynamic (DCHP) addressing. How do I configure my telephone adapter to work with my network?

IDT Voiceline Customer Service will be happy to assist you to set up this configuration. Please contact them at 800 269 0087 for more information.

Using IDT VoiceLine

Do I need to dial the area code when I make local calls?

No. IDT VoiceLine offers the convenience of 7-digit dialing. If you are calling a U.S. phone number with the same area code as your IDT VoiceLIne phone number, you only need to dial the 7-digit number.  For example, if you live in the 973 area code, to call another 973 number you only need to dial xxx-xxxx, instead of 973-xxx-xxxx.

Can I take IDT VoiceLine with me when I travel?

Yes. Your IDT VoiceLine service can travel with you. When someone calls your phone number, your phone simply rings wherever you have your telephone and adapter plugged into a broadband Internet connection -- whether you are home or traveling somewhere else in the world. Please note that you can only access emergency (911) services from the service address you provided when you set up your account. If you move your telephone adapter to another location, you will not be able to access emergency (911) services.

What features come with IDT VoiceLine?

Your calling plan includes great features such as VoiceMail, Call Waiting, Caller ID, Call Forwarding, and more -- all at no extra charge.  See our Features section for more information.

How do I use my IDT VoiceLine features?

The IDT VoiceLine User Guide contains instructions for using and managing your calling features.

How do I use the online account center?

To access the Account Center go to www.idt.net/account and select IDT VoiceLine as the account type.  You will need your IDT VoiceLine phone number and the 4-digit PIN you created when you signed up for the service to login.   The online account center contains a summary of your account, recent calls, and recent transactions. You can also listen to your VoiceMail messages, manage your feature settings, add Virtual Numbers and update your account information.

How do I set up my VoiceMail?

Please refer to the IDT VoiceLine User Guide to learn how to set up and use VoiceMail.

How can I retrieve my VoiceMail messages?

You can retrieve your VoiceMail messages from your IDT VoiceLine connected phone, from the online account center, or from any telephone in the world.
Consult the User Guide for complete instructions.

Can I send and receive faxes with IDT VoiceLine?

Yes. You can send and receive faxes by connecting a fax machine to the router version of the InnoMedia XT telephone adapter. No modifications need to be made to your telephone adapter or to your IDT VoiceLine account. Please note the following requirements for faxing with IDT VoiceLine. Sending faxes requires 70K of bandwidth and receiving faxes requires up to 90K of bandwidth. Simultaneous calling and faxing requires 100-170K of bandwidth. If you are not sure whether you have enough bandwidth for faxing, you can do an Internet search for "bandwidth test" and find web sites that will measure your connection speed.

How do I connect a fax machine to my telephone adapter?

You must connect the fax machine to a port on the InnoMedia XT telephone adapter that is already associated with a calling plan. For example, if you have one calling plan, you will need to connect the fax machine to Port 1 on the adapter. Before connecting the fax machine, you must disconnect the telephone from Port 1.If you send and receive faxes frequently, we suggest adding a calling plan to your IDT VoiceLine account. This will allow you to keep your fax machine permanently connected to the Port 2 of your InnoMedia adapter.

Are emergency (911) services available with IDT VoiceLine?

Emergency (911) services are available with IDT VoiceLine.   However, because IDT VoiceLine will not work during a power outage, IDT VoiceLine strongly recommends that you always maintain an alternate means of reaching a 911 operator in case of an emergency. Please read our information about the emergency (911) services available with IDT VoiceLine.

How does IDT VoiceLine's 911 work?

When you sign up for IDT VoiceLine service, you must register the address which corresponds to the physical location of your IDT VoiceLine phone. This will allow us to identify the emergency Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) in your area and route any emergency call appropriately. (You can not specify a P.O. Box.) Because it is not always possible to transmit your location and call back number to the emergency dispatcher who receives your call, we recommend that you immediately state your location once you reach a dispatcher. Please note:  IDT VoiceLine's  911-type dialing is NOT the same as traditional 911 dialing, and does not necessarily include all of the capabilities of traditional 911 dialing. Please read our information about the emergency (911) services available with IDT VoiceLine.

Will I have access to emergency (911) services when I travel with my IDT VoiceLine telephone adapter?

If you move your device to a location other than your service address, you will not be able to place emergency calls with IDT VoiceLine. If you permanently relocate your IDT VoiceLine, you must provide IDT Voiceline customer service with your new service address so that we may determine the emergency services available in your area and assign a new number. Please read our information about the emergency (911) services available with IDT VoiceLine.

What is the phone number for customer support?

You can reach our customer support team at these phone numbers
• From your IDT VoiceLine connected phone: 611
• Toll-free within the U.S.: 800 269 0087
Email: idtvoicelinesupport@idt.net

What is your return policy?

If your InnoMedia telephone adapter  is defective, it may be returned within 30 days of purchase, and we will exchange it for a new one. Before you return your device, please make sure you have followed the set up instructions correctly. Our online tutorial will take you through the easy setup process for the InnoMedia telephone adapter. You can also download our Getting Started Guide for more information. If you are still experiencing problems, check our Troubleshooting page. If you are still experiencing problems, contact our Customer Support team for further instructions.
